The Medal features the full figure of the Sheela na Gig surrounded by a blue enamel that is reminiscent of miraculous medals.
Each medal is brought to the site of a real Síle na Gig to be witnessed by the Síle in a performance of a "blessing", similar to traditional Catholic idolatry. The medal is both a wearable symbol of the Sheela na Gig as a nod to the divine feminine that was erased in Ireland, and it is a part of the performance art of the blessing process. There will be a note included with you medal noting the site and date of its blessing.
As with all of the collection, I crafted the pendant here in Ireland with traditional metal smithing techniques. The enamelling is also performed in my home studio. The pendant hangs on a 45cm rope chain 45cm made of 100% recycled sterling silver.
