The message of "Memento Mori" has changed so much over the years, that it's quite amazing that the phrase itself, and accompanying iconography has remained bound in our consciousness for so long. Initially, in Roman times, Memento Mori meant, "remember to live to the fullest as death is inevitable". Later, the Christains co-opted it into a warning that "the afterlife is coming, is your soul prepared?". Finally, in the Georgian era it began to morph into what most recognise it to mean now, a memento that reminds you of a departed loved one.
This Sterling silver necklace features a round coin-like pendant with a half skull, and the carved words: "Memento Mori". The pendant hand on a 45cm (18")belcher chain. 100% recycled sterling silver.
As with all of the fine jewellery in this shop, these pendants are crafted by me, here in Ireland with traditional metal smithing techniques. 100% recycled sterling silver.
